What does Gestalt
have to do with Reading?
At Stable Reading each child receives one-on-one reading instruction which includes: reading strategies, phonics and phonemic awareness skills, access to appropriate books, writing, and word work, in addition to, ongoing assessments.
For some children this approach is exactly what’s needed to give your child the extra boost necessary to increase reading proficiency. For other children reading does not progress quickly or easily. It can often include frustration, fear, and meltdowns. These interferences are often difficult to overcome even though school districts, teachers, and parents work hard to provide favorable interventions for a child. Therefore, in addition to a structured reading lesson, Stable Reading addresses the emotional challenges children hold about reading achievement. Using gestalt coaching and gestalt play therapy, children receive an emotionally positive experience. This helps them break through barriers and move past negative self-images to ultimately strengthen the self. Gestalt provides access to the present moment. Many children who struggle in reading are not in the present moment because the pressure of reading accurately, combined with memories of having failed in the past, makes it almost impossible to attend to meaning in the present. Gestalt coaching, play therapy and a sound reading instruction philosophy, allows a child the opportunity to move forward as a willing and confident reader. |
